Provision of Medical Oxygen and Portable Assistive Devices

US DOT expanded the scope of the Rule to include the free provision of medical oxygen and portable respiration assistive devices.

AAPA felt that the responsibility for certifying portable respiration assistive devices should lie with the device manufacturers instead of with the carrier as proposed by the US DOT.

In addition, various other aspects of the proposed rule were thoroughly impractical given the nature of airline operations.

With respect to the provision of medical oxygen, AAPA cannot support mandating the provision of these services to passengers at no charge, as the charges levied currently for the supply of medical oxygen only partially offset the true cost of providing such services.
